Gaertig & Thiemann
1902 Gaertig & Thiemann Wooden Camera complete with lens & film holders
Cleaned, Lubricated & Adjusted. Ready for immediate use
This is a circa 1902 Gaertig & Thiemann plate camera. It's made of fine woods accented with nickel plated brass trim and features green leather bellows which are in good condition and completely light tight. It comes with three, double sided wooden glass plate holders which appear to be original to the camera. A previous owner also fit it with a removable viewfinder. I’ve been using it as a display item in my shop but now it's time to pass it on to a new owner who will appreciate it and may be interested in using it.
The matt glass is hinged and can be allowed to hang downward vertically so that a film holder can be slid into place. I measured the interior of the wooden holders and they appear to be designed to hold 9 x 12cm. glass photographic plates.
The lens and shutter are just as unusual as the camera and quite old. The lens is a 'Mars Anastigmat' set in a Kilos shutter with a very attractive finish. The shutter has been carefully cleaned and serviced. It has a speed range of T & 1 second – 1/300th. The aperture range is f6.3, 11, 16, 22, 32, 44. The shutter functions well, however because of it's design and the fact that it's approximately 100 years old, the shutter is not going to be perfectly accurate. (However because of the wide exposure tolerance of modern films this shouldn't be a problem.)
The lens has been cleaned inside and out and the glass is exceptionally clean and clear, and has obviously been used with care . There are no scratches or cleaning marks and it's capable of producing lovely photos with modern color and B&W film.
The camera comes with a lovely brown canvas case for the camera and plate holders and a separate leather case for the lens/shutter. (It's also easy to fit your favorite lens& shutter for this format.)
All in all, an attractive wooden camera. The wood and green leather bellows make it a lovely addition to any camera collection.
