There’s a real charm to owning and using a vintage camera that’s difficult to put into words. Part of it has to do with a sense of history and heritage as well as the simple pleasure of manually setting the dials. Personally I like the simple purity of it and the outstanding results when you get it right, results that always amaze friends and family. It’s a bit like fly fishing I suppose, where the feel of the rod, the rush of the line between your finger tips and the fresh mountain air, cool against your face, is just as important as the fish themselves. After all, if you just want fish… it’s quicker to buy them at the local super market.
If you understand what I mean and you want a lovely classic camera that uses normal 120 roll film and produces excellent results without costing a small fortune, you may want to look at this next camera.
In this listing we have a rather rare Herlango-Renox 6x9 camera which was produced in circa 1937. At that time, Herlango was the largest photographic dealer in Austria and they specialized is selling fine German cameras which were special ordered to meet their specifications and sold under their name. These cameras are rather difficult to find but it’s nearly impossible to find one in near mint condition especially because they were very popular and often used quite intensely during WWII.
This camera is among the rare few cameras that have managed to survive in pristine condition. Additionally it’s been carefully cleaned, lubricated and adjusted. Everything works well and should continue to do so for many years to come. The leather bellows are completely light tight. The quality Compur shutter works well and all speeds (B, 1 Sec – 1/250th) are appropriate. The slow speeds buzz along nicely and the fast speeds are clean and snappy.
The lens is a Steinheil München f3.8/10.5cm (105mm) Cassar lens. It’s an excellent three element design based on the classic Cooke triplet and well known for its lovely rendition and attractive background bokeh. The lens is in exceptionally fine condition and looks virtually like new. It’s clean and clear. There are no scratches, no cleaning marks and it’s capable of producing lovely photos modern color and B&W films.
All in all a very fine usable classic camera. Load it with your favorite film and keep it handy for that perfect shot you’ve been looking for. You know the one... the one with the perfect Ansel Adams light breaking through the dark storm clouds that leaves you wishing that you had a classic camera with you...
