Voigtlander
1934 Voigtlander 6x6 Superb TLR with original case, CLAd, Freshly Serviced!
Cleaned, Lubricated & Adjusted. Ready for immediate use
This is a rare Voigtlander Superb TLR which was produced in Germany prior to WWII. It was a very expensive camera which was only produced for two years. The Great Depression of the 1930’s hit Germany considerably harder than the rest of the world and because of the economic climate it was inevitable that a camera in this stratospheric price range would not sell well. As a result, it suffered a similar fate as the legendary Voigtlander Prominent. Production was short and not many units were sold, making it very difficult now-a-days to find a clean and fully functional example.
Introduced in the same year as the legendary Voigtlander Prominent rangefinder camera, the Superb TLR shares many of the goals, philosophy and manufacturing techniques displayed in the Prominent. Voigtlander developed a serious alternative for the 6x6 Rolleiflex and then joyously over-engineered it to create this heavy duty Über Kamera. The body is die-cast alloy. Film moves horizontally rather than vertically (as in in Rolleiflex). To adjust for viewfinder parallax, the top lens moves forward and down when the camera is close focused. Among the interesting features, the shutter speed dial is engraved in reverse (mirrored) so that it will appear correct when viewed from above through a small prism. It’s a substantial camera and it weighs quite a bit more than a classic Rolleiflex.
It may be 84 years old but this Voigtlander Super is in beautiful condition and fully functional. Naturally there are signs of use, for example some of the chrome worn but it’s obvious that it’s was a prized possession and used with care. So, if you’ve been looking for a and significant prewar camera to enjoy using, than you may have just found it.
This camera has been carefully cleaned, lubricated and adjusted. The Compur shutter works well and all speeds (1 Sec-1/250th) are appropriate. The slow speeds buzz along nicely and the faster ones are clean and snappy.
The Voigtlander Skopar 3.5/7,5 cm (75mm) is a classic design with four elements in three groups. The lens is in exceptionally fine condition. There are no scratches or cleaning marks. It’s clean and clear. There are no separated elements, crystallization or other problems and it’s capable of producing lovely photos on modern color and B&W films.
It comes complete with a rare original brown leather case.
All in all, a wonderful vintage camera. The perfect camera for photographers with a historical interest. (It’s also an excellent choice for WWII reenactors.) Load it with your favorite film and keep it handy for that perfect shot you’ve been looking for. You know the one... the one with the perfect Ansel Adams light breaking through the dark storm clouds that leaves you wishing you had a classic camera with you.
