Carl Zeiss Jena
Carl Zeiss 2.8/35mm “T” Coated Biogon Contax Lens
Fits Contax I, II & III
Camera NOT included
The 35mm Zeiss Biogon developed for the Contax rangefinder cameras is well known lens and is recognized as a master piece of design. When it was introduced it was the very best 35mm lens available. Even today the 35mm Biogon is well respected. What artists and photographers still love about the lens is the lovely rendition in the fore and back ground. It’s something the Japanese refer to as bokeh. Simply said this lens has a very lovely rendition and bokeh. The focus rolls on and off very smoothly… Soft out of focus foreground moves lovingly into sharp focus on your subject matter and then off again into gently blurred background.
The serial number on this lens (3132524) indicates that it was produced in circa 1947. It represents a continuation of the original 2.8/35 lens formula and it has the same pale blue “T” coating that was used during WWII on Zeiss optics. As a result of this. this lens will fit the earlier Contax I, II & III cameras but not the later IIa & IIIa Contax cameras which weren’t in production yet. (The IIa & IIIa have a narrower space behind the lens mount and cannot accommodate the rear element of this lens.)
This lens is in lovely condition. The glass is clean and clear but does have the usual cleaning marks that’s typical of early T coated lenses. There is no crystallization, separation, fungus or other problems and it’s capable of producing lovely photos with modern color and B&W films. (As with all early lenses, we recommend keeping the light behind you for best performance.)
It comes complete with a Carl Zeiss lens cap and a hard to find early brass rear cap with a black paint finish.
All in all a nice addition to your classic Contax collection.
